Delta skymiles member benefits

Delta Air Lines, based in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the largest and most renowned airlines in the United States. With nine airport hubs around the United States, most regular travelers will likely take a Delta domestic aircraft at some time. Delta's international network is extremely large, thanks to its membership in the SkyTeam airline alliance, which expands its global coverage.

Delta's reward program, SkyMiles, is free to join, and points never expire, so signing up is worthwhile even if you only fly Delta sometimes. One of the most effective methods to earn Delta SkyMiles is to use one of Delta's many co-branded credit cards, which allows you to earn rewards without ever flying with Delta.

How to Earn Delta SkyMiles

The first step in earning SkyMiles is to join the free SkyMiles program. If you have family members under 13, a parent or guardian must register them. SkyMiles members enjoy free in-flight Wi-Fi on domestic flights, so it's worth joining up the entire family. SkyMiles never expire, so even infrequent fliers may gradually accrue rewards.

Earn miles by flying with Delta

The conventional way to earn SkyMiles is to fly a Delta flight. You will earn SkyMiles mileage based on the price of the ticket. General SkyMiles members receive 5 SkyMiles for every dollar spent (before taxes and fees) on ticket purchases. Members with elite Medallion status can earn up to 11 SkyMiles per dollar on basic fares, depending on their level. SkyMiles are not earned on Basic Economy flights, thus if you wish to earn them, you must purchase Main Cabin or higher rates.

While ticket cost is often used to compute earned SkyMiles, some exemption tickets reward based on a proportion of the distance flown. Higher fares pay more than economy fares. Exceptional rates include vacation packages, cruises, and discounts.

Delta Medallion Status

Members with Delta Medallion status earn redeemable SkyMiles at a greater rate, depending on their status level, when they fly on Delta-operated flights. And, of course, Delta Medallion status offers a variety of benefits at each level, rewarding the airline's most loyal customers. Medallion status is decided by a single qualifier—Medallion Qualification Dollars.

As Delta eases into the new program, the 2024 MQD levels for 2025 status are as follows:

  • Silver Medallion costs $5,000 MQDs.
  • Gold Medallion: $10,000 MQDs.
  • Platinum Medallion costs $15,000 MQDs.
  • Diamond Medallion costs $28,000 MQDs

Credit Card Spending

Delta's co-branded personal and corporate credit cards let you earn status and limitless redeeming SkyMiles on daily transactions. Spending using your Delta credit card is a simple method to increase your SkyMiles balance without flying.

No Delta co-branded card charges foreign transaction fees, making it an attractive international card alternative. With the exception of the no-annual-fee Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card (Terms apply, see rates & fees), Delta credit cards provide several benefits, including priority boarding and a free first checked bag, which is beneficial to passengers who do not have Delta elite status.
